Yeah, my new camera does have a stitch-assist mode. But what makes getting a panorama difficult, especially in places which see a fair amount of movement/people is that unexpected details get recorded. And these unexpected/unwanted detail are the closest to you - like in the photo above - which showed all those ropes and cables and other bric-brac of the jetty on either end of the pan. Also, if like me you are shooting hand-held, it's difficult to align images when stitching.
