Oh right. SEA is west coast, around 3 hours from LAX. Still much longer trip.

SQ529 MAA-SIN 11:30 -- 06:00 +1
SQ38 SIN - LAX 16:15 -- 15:50
UA286 LAX-SEA 18:40 -- 19:21

4 hours + 15:35 hours + 2:41 hours, 10:15 hours layover in SIN and 2:50 hours
in LAX.

Return is 2:37 + 18:20 + 4:00 hours, 1:48 layover in LAX and 2:10 layover in
SIN.
35:21 hours onward and 28:55 return.

Lufthansa -

LH759 MAA-FRA 1:50 -- 07:15
LH468 FRA-PDX 10:15 -- 12:00
UA5755 PDX-SEA 1:52 -- 2:47

9:55 + 3:10 layover + 10:45 + 1:52 layover + 00:55 = 28:15 onward

Return = 00:52 + 6:48 layover [you can certainly catch a later flight!] + 10:20
+ 1:35 layover + 8:40 = 28:15 hours. You can certainly trim that by 3..4
hours, easily.

Oh, and I see that the costs work out to half that of a Singapore airlines trip
:)

Even shorter by 2 hours or so, and cheaper would be to fly a US airline all
through (taxes and fuel surcharges are far, far lower) .. DL BOM-ATL or CO
BOM/DEL-EWR. Or AA DEL-ORD. Balancing that against doing ultra long haul on a
US carrier, in coach, with abysmal service standards compared to SQ, or to
European carriers like AF/LH/BA is something you'll have to consider. Oh, and
having to spend a night in BOM or DEL on arrival .. something that'll push up
your travel costs substantially.
