An observation I have had (with running Ubuntu on and off) is that the
gconf settings get organically mangled. I have never had the time to
clean out the entries though - there's a tool in GNOME these days that
allows that. The other not_so_safe option is to remove all the .g* bits
excluding .gimp etc (note: if you use empathy as the IM client, back up
the logs from .gnome2/Empathy/) and re-login to regenerate the bits
