The random installs might have a hand in the current state of affairs. I did something like this and after a year did a clean install of Gutsy. On a different hard disk ;-) my thinkpad is quite happy now, mostly. Still have swap problems. Discovered today at IISc that connecting to a projector/external monitor works flawlessly. My previous fears were unfounded.
