I've started again, and recommend it highly.
Having sorely needed a distraction last fall, I joined a local band.
(we leave tomorrow for Belgium)
A couple of weeks ago they asked if I could play trumpet next season,
and I replied, "in principle, yes", having played percussion and
sundry wind instruments in my youth, albeit no brass in the treble
clef before.
Armed with a new trumpet, I've since discovered that my embouchure
isn't as trashed as I'd worried. Happily I haven't had the
personality clashes with instructors mentioned in this thread, but
that's one of the advantages of autodidacticism (the disadvantages
being that my teacher doesn't really know what he's doing, and
furthermore has the poor taste to assign Britney Spears pieces for
practice -- with the excuse that her vocal lines, being largely runs
and simple intervals, are perfectly suited to someone who has yet to
acquire his playing chops)
