Indeed. The European settlers did a thorough job of killing off their
competitors here. (I would say "we" but for the fact that my ancestors
didn't touch the New World until around 1950, by which time the deed
had long since been done. Also, it is widely claimed that the Dutch
bought Manhattan fair and square for a basket of beads or some such. I
have no idea if it is true, but if it is then the locals at least got
something they wanted for the land under my apartment building, which
is far better than the usual deal of the time: lead shot, smallpox
virus, and "reservations".)
