Also across linguistic and regional lines I'd add. Language remains the
highest divisor, then religion, followed by class lines. Is it any wonder
then that India retains its numerous languages despite countless invaders?

When most countries of the world gave up the local tongues and gods in
deference to the conquerors, Indians seem to have held on remarkably well,
giving in by only the slightest.
