I'm going to sharply bring down the level of the books being referred to, and say that, out of sync with my high school- and college-mates, I could never go more than a few pages of those Mills and Boons and Hermina Black type of novels. These are the staple diet of generations of young women, so I wonder what's wrong with my genetic makeup....because what I read at that time were the Biggles books!
I resisted reading "Gone With the Wind" just *because* it was A Book That Everyone Must Read. And when I did, I enjoyed most of it, but the long descriptions...I skipped lightly over them, I am afraid. I also resisted reading "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged" for the same reason and I could not finish them as I just did not like them. ...and though I really enjoyed "David Copperfield", I wonder if I would have got through all those pages...and characters.... if I'd not had it as part of my undergraduate syllabus...that much-maligned "non-detailed text". Deepa.
