It seems you understood it better than I did.
Gogol was dangerously subversive in his humor. Even more with his extremely
broad humor, giving his characters there names like "Khlopov" (Slap-ov) for
a schoolteacher, "Svistunov" (punch-ov) for a cop etc.
That's one reason why he was never proscribed by the communists, by the way
