Since Udhay said that he "feels strongly" about this, let me start by stating that I too feel very strongly about this group's privacy settings
Until recently (or about a couple of years ago), anyone could join silk. Only now has Udhay started screening join requests. In an open list like that, having the archives publically accessible is just a hop away from posting on the list anyway.
