True, but however, a sort of security by obscurity prevailed, as I
didn't make any efforts to publicize the list. In effect, only those who
I or other listmembers invited would join, with a few stray exceptions
who found their way in by sheer serendipity.

However, when people started blogging and otherwise publicizing the
list, I made the "invite only" aspect a little more technically true by
requiring an approval for membership.

In my opinion, anything you write online should be treated as publicly
accessible, with the caveat that various different registers still apply.
