I agree with Deepa that one has to schedule some slack into activities.
I personally need to schedule space to myself for every day, and when I
don't I'm not very productive in other spheres either.

Doctorow's thoughts made me realise that everyone goes through these
phases, so was very glad to read it.

For eg, when I was 19 at Christ College, I was doing too many things - dumb
charading, 20 qs (which required practice), quizzing, being a boyfriend,
being a guitarist in what can only be charitably called the college's B or
C band (the A one being the nucleus of Thermal And A Quarter) - that I had
to choose quickly. Eventually, I chose to walk out of the band.

Since then I've had to do some winnowing of my own every few years, but it
is progressively harder to do this now.

I'm currently on the lookout for a system that helps me programme some
must-do things in my life so I can 'optimise' some time.
