A somewhat simpler solution is to just lower the voltage. There
doesn't seem to be anything magical
about the value of 27 volts. I think it was originally just a convenient
voltage to generate that gave rapid results.
I suspect that the smallest particles are generated when 'nothing' is
apparently happening (i.e current is
less than 3 mA and no discharge is apparent). I get acceptable (although
slow) results by limiting the voltage to
a range of 5 - 8 VDC and a maximum current of 2 mA. At least the result is
what is currently accepted by the
majority of the list as proper home-brew CS based on color.
As I have stated long ago I am still not convinced that the amber color
is attributable to the Tindall effect
and is quite possibly due to oxidation or 'tarnish' of the silver in
suspension.
I am in the middle of a move from Japan back to Texas ( !!! ) and don't
have a lot of time to experiment.
Hopefully I can get a chance to send off a sample of "slow-brew" CS to Jim
Einert and get his observations on
record. I am interested in comparing it to the "pulsating" variety of Bruce
Stenulson.
I also have thought about different electrode configurations. If I
could find a cup or container made of
something other than Sterling that would be interesting...
