I have a small inexpensive $6.99 crock pot that I was using for making
aromatherapy products. I fill the pot 3/4 to the top with water, wait until it
heats and put into it my covered jar with distilled water. The crock pot
maintains a very steady, low heat and never reaches boiling point.
It is just enough to generate greater conductivity and expidite the process.

pot turned on with nothing else in the
crock pot? Will that crack the pottery?

I use a margerine lid with the silver wire poking through the top to
cover my jar, and that keeps the dust out. It also keeps the wires in
place pretty good.

Heat does seem to work as a stirrer.

A foolish faith in authority is the worst enemy of truth.
