Actually I have read an extremely convincing article, complete with
measurments of the intestines of various species which refutes the above
statement. The conclusion of the article was that humans have digestive
systems much closer to carnivores than to herbivores.
I feed my cats the best kibble they will accept (that was an effort in
itself--they prefer crap) and some canned food, some home-cooked chicken
and turkey, bone broth when I have it, etc. They will NOT eat raw (I
spent a lot of time and a lot of money finding this out, one will not
even eat homecooked meat and broth). And I'm not about to try to starve
them into eating raw. On one raw feeding list for cats that I was
temporarily a member of, at least one cat owner was told that her cat
would not starve itself but would give in and eat the raw, if she
provided nothing else. Well the cat didn't eat it, and it did starve
itself into liver disease. Not something I'm willing to risk. Nor do I
want the guilt and remorse that person now has to live with because she
trusted the opinions and pseudo-knowledge of people who should have
known better (as the owner should have). I now believe there is a lot of
advice given on at least some rawfeeding lists that is just plain wrong
and can be harmful as in the case I mentioned. I give my cats the best
food I can within the parameters of what they are willing to eat. I
found I could not continue to fight them over their food. It was
stressing the hell out of them and me also. Stress in itself is
extremely damaging to health and can shorten lives.
