>Have you studied the intestinal tracks of dogs?
Yes and that of horses, humans and ruminants as well as some reptiles.
>The reason I feed a
>raw diet is I want all grains out of the diet since their intestinal
>track is not designed to deal with grains.
Actually I am not in agreement with this statement. Wolves will eat
anything rather than starve, so I would have to say that yes they do eat
grains. Also they eat the whole animal so any undigested or partially
digested grains in the GI tract of prey animals is also eaten. I have
seen dogs eat natural grains on rye grass when it was going to seed also.
>I live in a rural area
>and feed prey method to my dogs. None get are exposed to any
>chemicals here at home. I cannot afford to feed the dogs organic
>but would if I could. But I do feed only human grade food.
So you have no electronics that out gas pesticides in your home or
other out gassing products such as plastic ware in your kitchen,
furniture or fabrics, new clothes that all outgas formaldehyde, paint
that out gases pesticide, particle board or medium density fiber board,
glues ,mastick under your vinyl floors . . . there are so many toxins in
homes these days that the EPA stated in 1998 that the indoor air
pollution in our homes has a greater impact on our health than
industrial air pollution and car exhaust.

>Have you ever seen any dog raid a grain, corn or rice field? I
>haven't and the dogs on the farm I grew up on never did. What I
>don't get are the people who try to feed veggies and go through all
>the effort to juice or cook them so the dogs can digest something
>that they are not designed for.
I have had many dogs eat plain whole grains right out of the horses'
grain buckets, no molasses or other additives to entice them.
As well they will raid the chicken feed, crumbles or pellets on a
regular basis. I have observed this with over 20 of my own dogs over the
past 30 years as well as seen friends dogs do this on other farms so I
can not agree with the statement that dogs don't eat grains.
I don't live where grain is grown so I can't say I have seen them eat
fresh growing grain. I do see them eat grass with seed heads on it and
herbs quite frequently. I had one dog that in her old age would eat
Comfrey fresh off the plant, as well as oregano and marjoram. Not that
these are grains but they are leafy green vegetables.

>I'm sorry to hear of your loss of pups. From your post I assume
>your bitch had eclampsia which could kill the bitch but what was
>the cause of the pups death?
Lack of calcium, their hearts were not beating although they were fully
oxygenated at birth. This was the diagnosis of several vets including
the world's foremost authority on Canine Neonatology who consulted on
the case.
Yes the bitch could have died, it was eclampsia.
>I feel it is very important to study the diet of wolves and feed
>dogs accordingly.
Then I must in all seriousness ask do you eat like a chimpanzee since
our DNA is less than 1% different? we are closer to them than dogs are
to wolves when you use mitochondrial DNA as the basis of comparison.
If not why not? Why is it more important for your dogs to eat like
wolves than for your family to eat like chimpanzees?
>Sorry but I feel that valid comparisons have been in the wild for
>many years and that can not be considered anecdotal information.
No need to apologize. Please review the meaning of "anecdotal" in
scientific usage as ell as the way I used it in context and this will
clear up this issue.

Good luck with your new venture. There is a great need for correct
information to be circulated.
My views on vaccinating are to use no thimerosal (mercury) containing
vaccines and to separate each one that I use, only Distemper, Parvo and
Rabies -- the new core protocol -- by two weeks so that the puppies
immune systems are not overwhelmed by multiple antigens being introduced
at the same time.

Not all kibbles have the cheapest materials or rendered pets. However I
do think the labels on dog food and human food are inadequate and should
disclose more information.
I do not think AFCO is perfect but their standards are better than no
standards at all for kibble. Companies that test their food are higher
on my trust radar than those who simple comply with AFCO standards. The
label tells us basic categories of what is in the food but not how
digestible those ingredients are, those values are for total content not
total digestible nutrient. There is much room for improvement in
labeling both human and pet foods.
Many kibbles have higher quality ingredients than others. There are some
that do not use rendered animals or inferior quality ingredients.

Me too, and I dislike eating out especially if they do not offer fresh
veggies. Our food supply is at serious risk and most of us are
blissfully unaware or in denial. Those of us who are aware do not have
perfect solutions but at least we are discussing the issue and raising
awareness. Organics is the fastest growing industry and a hot investment
area. I see so many more products in the grocery than even two years
ago, it is encouraging. I have to credit consumers for demanding higher
food quality and safety. We have won some battles but the war is not over.
