Faith, you may need to lighten up a bit with the use of unadorned
epithets like "Nonsense" and "Rubbish." They come across much harsher
and more insulting than I think you realize or intend. I would
appreicate it.

That aside, I'd like to address a couple of things to this topic that
us old-timers on the group need to refresh in everyone's mind.

Bob Berger, one of our most vigorous researchers, now departed, sadly,
advocated using the clear PETE plastic bottles of the exact kind that
are usually used for soda pop. These he found to be extremely low in
contamination, not to mention very inexpensive.

I've long used this kind of bottle, but I always buy them filled with
drinking water of some kind so that I never have to fight to get the
flavor and odor of the original beverage out of them. A simple rinse
with distilled water and they're ready to go.

I believe these have the 1 (one) in the triangle on their bottom.

Bob was also a strong advocate of the notion that good CS does NOT need
to be protected from light. In fact, if you're making it right, you can
literally keep it on the windowsill in full sunlight for years without
it going bad. He did that exact experiment, and detected no measurable
degradation in samples taken over periods of months and years, using
sensitive, professional quality test equipment to measure its
concentration.

"Making it right" generally involves some kind of current controlled or
current limited generator with a fairly low current density relative to
electrode surface area, modest concentration, clear, colorless, with a
slight Tyndal effect (at most). Dee's silver puppy certainly qualifies.

Some commercial products, however, are made by different processes,
such as chemical precipitation or different kinds of electrolysis
conditions, or are of high concentration, contain silver salts or other
compounds, with additives of who knows what, and may actually need to
be protected from the light. These are probably not as safe as most of
us would want and deserve to be avoided

I imagine some vendors of good products also may use colored plastic or
glass just because that's what customers expect, even though they might
not need it for their particular product.

That whole assumption, however, is a holdover from the early days when
we used to make CS with a drop or two of salt solution or other
materials as "starter" to speed things up. The stuff we made that way
indeed NEEDED to be protected.

In fact, the dark bottles we were encouraged to use could even disguise
the silver sediment that would drop out of those preparations over
time! I know I didn't realize how badly my primitive "CS" was settling
out until I went to thoroughly clean the dark blue bottles I'd been
using, and discovered all this silver sludge in the bottom! That was
the wake-up call that got me to finally upgrade my methods to using
only pure water and no additives, and, later, current limiting.

So, Dee, it would be okay to use clear glass or colored. If you're
willing to use plastic, then the PETE of the sort that soda pop comes
in has been used without concern by quite a few of us. I recommend
buying bottled water in the same kind of bottles and tossing the water.
<grin>

You certainly don't need to store your CS on the window sill, but I
also don't think you need to be extremely concerned about keeping it in
utter darkness, either. My CS, in PETE bottles, sits out on the desk in
my office and continues to work fine whether it sits for a few weeks or
even months, or is used right away.

I hope that helps.

Be well,

Mike D,.
