Dale; My experience is that the electrodes should be about a mouse gray if the silver and water are of good quality. If the electrodes are coal black then you have problems.
I would sugget that you note the brew time and the current in the cell so that you can replicate the process. You will find that the initial current in the cell is a good indicator as to the water quality. A current in the range of .28 to .35 indicates very good water for low voltage CS.
