I had a cat that loved lettuce and another that craved raw potatoes and yet another that went wild over raw okra.
 Cats eat a lot of herbs and grasses if they can get to them.

But then, I had a black cat that liked used motor oil soaked kitty litter and charcoal chunks too. [That one didn't live very long]
I guess he figured he wasn't black enough ?

Since horses eat plant material I bet it would be safe for them to try--you'd have to ask someone more knowledgeable about horses. But for cats--they are strict meat eaters and do not have the enzymes that can handle plant material. Dogs can do good with herbs though--so I believe this would be species specific.
