Recently, a cell phone tower was installed just a few hundred feet from
our house.
We face it directly. It is visible out our front windows.
My wife has read a lot about cell phone tower (RF) radiation and its
dangers, so we purchased a very good meter to see how much radiation we are
getting.
When we measured the radiation, we found that our first floor was not
too bad on the interior of the house. Apparently, the old sheet rock used
in 1960 when the house was built can stop most of the RF waves. It also
seems that screens on the windows have a blocking effect. The meter measure
microwatts per square meter. The studies we have read recommend no more
than one microwatt per square meter, and we were measuring anywhere from 3
to 10 microwatts per square meter. When we step out front, facing the
tower, however, we are reading between 150 and 200 microwatts per square
meter.
To put that in perspective, the FCC limit for exposure to RF radiation
is FIVE MILLIWATS PER SQUARE CENTIMETER (based on what I read on the FCC web
site). If you do the conversions, you will discover that this a a very
large number, far, far above what we are receiving. To receive this much,
you would probably have to climb the tower and stand directly in front of
the antennas. Even then it might not be that high. Of course, as we all
know, the FCC limit was established based on the recommendation of the cell
phone and radio broadcasting industries, who consistently deny that there
are any adverse health effects of this radiation at the levels now
blanketing the world.
Our second floor got much higher readings than the first, about 50 to 70
microwatts per square meter. This is a converted attic and is only
protected by the roof, which does not have nearly the blocking ability of
the walls on the first floor. It is also more directly in line with the
tower, given the extra height.
The shocker however was when I walked into my offict on the second floor
and discovered that there I was receiving enough radiation to send the meter
into fits. It was above what this particular meter could measure (it is
limited to 2000 microwatts per square meter). Where was it coming from?
Well, it was coming from my cordless phone base unit sitting right next
to my computer monitor on my desk. I have apparently been absorbing very
high levels of radiation from this device for several years. As far as I
can tell, however, it has not done me any obvious harm. There may be harm
it has done which is not obvious, but that would be difficult to determine.
To make a long story short, we got rid of our cordless phone right away
(also our wireless network hub) and now have no wireless devices in the
house. But I can't help think that the radiation we are getting from the
cell phone tower pales to insignificance compared to what I have been
absorbing for years from the cordless phone base on my desk. There are some
things you can do to reduce the radiation entering the house from outside
(special window film or hangings and wall paint) and I think if we take some
of these measure to get the readings even lower, we will be adequately
protected. Even the most conservative organizations say that 1 microwatt
per square meter is perfectly safe. In the studies we have read where there
was a high incidence of cancer due to cell phone tower radiation, the lowest
exposure was about 3000 microwatts per square meter. That is very high
compared to what we are measuring, so I think we are ok where we are.
However, my wife thinks we should consider moving (again!).
If anyone on the list has knowledge of this, I would appreciate an
opinion. I have read oodles of info online, but remain uncertain as to
whether we are in any long term danger from this tower or not.

PS: We have also taken measures to eliminate EMF fields emaniting from the
electrical circuits. When we measure these (with yet another meter) they
were nearly off the charts. Now they are well within the safety limits.
PSS: We have also installed a whole house water filter as well as undersink
drinking water and shower filters to deal with the chloramine which the
municipality adds to our drinking water. This was giving us skin rashes and
possibly other ailments. And the list goes on and on ........ Sometimes I
think it is amazing we are still alive (are we?).
