Jaxi- The metal lamp I have has 2 cross bars in the front, I keep it about that distance away and usually with some cotton cloth over my skin. It can be hard to put it in a good position, most come with a clip on them but it's a challenge to hang them in the right place. I have used various racks, coat racks, metal walkers, etc. for positioning. Before I broke my rib I used to get fierce pain between my shoulder blades when washing dishes for an hour or more, since I am 5'8" and have to stoop over. The funny thing was that after using the heat lamp on my back for the broken rib a lot, I stopped getting the pain when I washed the dishes.:-)

doesn't it give off too much heat to have it right next to your skin? How do you position it?

I love this idea

PT- I only speak from personal experience, but the Infrared heat
emitters have done wonderful things for me in healing knee
injuries, neck injuries, sore back, shoulders, etc. I had severe
neck problems once, shooting pains for just slightly turning my
head, numb sensations, etc. and lay on the couch with the emitter
heating my neck for a couple of hours. The pain totally went
away and has not returned. I surmise that the heat stretches the
tendons and ligaments and helps them go back into correct
    alignment. Just my theory.

100 watt emitter lasts for years, mine still works, use in ceramic
socket lamp like for poultry or photography.

Does this have some property that is more helpful than say, a

When I broke a rib I used my infrared heat lamp (for lizards,
coiled ceramic heat emitter) and it helped take away pain and
        heal faster.
