Busy week: no time to dig out the great document on the current dilemma of shingles, but here's a thumbnail I hope I'm remembering correctly. When I had shingles, I did a lot of homework and learned that if one has ever has chicken pox, the herpes zoster organism is already entrenched in the body and that stress, chemo therapy, and other factors of weakening immune system (including aging) can entice it out.
This was always the scenario until the chickenpox vaccine came into vogue. Despite the low mortality rate of chickenpox, big pharma saw a great opportunity to market a new product and marketed it well. The reuslt: a couple generations didn't get chickenpox, but like the Native peoples who were never exposed to measles, before the white man arrived, the rarity of chickenpox also meant that many of people who would have normally been mildly exposed in passing infected folks and acquired immunity also did not. Hence, the increase in shingles in younger and younger people who are having herpes zoster outbreaks without ever having had chickenpox. A growth industry for big pharma, as you can see by the number of TV ads. Once it's in your system, it can re-emerge and if your immune system is compromised it's something to watch for and avoid.
