I have found that much of the bad smell of DMSO can be removed by freezing the DMSO in the refrigerator (not the freezer compartment, use the regular refrigerator compartment). The water component will remain liquid while the DMSO crystallizes and most of the bad smelling components will remain in the water portion. Carefully pour out and discard the water portion of the DMSO and you will have a more purified product left in the original bottle. I don't think this works if the water content is too high. I cannot taste or smell the purified DMSO when I use it topically, but the original DMSO or the decanted part will give me the garlic smell immediately. It is certainly worth doing.
I would think that one could re-hydrate this with 3 to 5% distilled water, mix it up well and re-purify it once again to get a more purified product.
