I have been making a liter at a time, with a pair of ~2cm x
~3 cm x 3mm silver electrodes, with about 100 coulombs,
spread out through a full day (~ 1mA current). No stirring.
But this rate does produce some black oxide on the anode
and some silver powder on the cathode, that falls to the
bottom, so it is wasting some of the silver.
I am experimenting with a pulse generator that produces 200
volt pulses of very short duration (~20 microseconds)
separated by 20 milliseconds of idle time (0.1% duty cycle),
in an attempt to produce the same solution, with less silver
waste. I haven't reached any conclusions, yet, except that
this seems to produce no black oxide on the anode, but
electro-polishes it to a shine, instead. The average
current is also lower than 1mA, even though the peak current
is quite a bit higher, because of all the idle time. The
last batch took about three days to do what a steady
milliamp does in one day.
