I consider that a reasonable concern... Part of why we're relatively
safe from interference here is because we're not big enough to be a
threat. Security by obscurity, in a way.

The insularity of our little community has spared us from much of the
conflict you see in less protected public spaces. I've allowed the group
to languish to a degree the last several years that it has slowed our
growth and stifled activity enough that I've been able to get away
without having to intervene very much... (And I'll explain more of the
reasons for that in the near future.)

We're basically flying under the radar.

If we started a full-fledged web forum, perhaps with features like
e-mail integration and blogs/wiki, it would attract a lot more links and
clicks and we'd get a steady stream of new folks who would NOT be part
of the existing culture. Ultimately we'd have to adapt to their presence
while we gradually built the new community.

The principles I've applied to this list may serve as a good basis for
an online community of that type, but I'd bet that I (and my fellow
volunteers) would still face a steep learning curve applying them in a
much larger context.

The bottom line answer to your concern, Neville, is that it boils down
to how well the moderators do their job. How well I learn to adapt our
guiding principles to the new environment and how well I communicate
that to the volunteers.

Meanwhile, I'm still curious if anybody is actually limited in their
ability to deal with web-based resources? Still on dial-up? Machine too
slow?

Be well,

Mike D.
