Hallo Ode, Yes that does make complete sense, that the silver must be able to get in contact to be able to do anything.
In my gut it is only the tail end that contains fairly solid material, the rest is quite liquid. The rectum contents are more or less a putty consistency. As a generality. going backwards, the contents above the sigmoid flexure are almost always liquid, sort of a thick stew consistency and getting more and more liquid. Wobble your tummy and listen to the sloshes and gurgles; most of that is way from being solid. Of course the silver has difficulty making it through mucus, and there is a lot of that there, in which the micro-organisms can hide.
