 Hi Marshall,
The Bombardier Bettle is an interesting creature. When attack it
directs a nasty spray at its enemy, it can direct the spray in any
direction very accurately. The Bombardier Bettle rapidly generates H2O2
at a rate of several milliom molecules per second, in special glands,
which is immediately decomposed as fast as it is generated by the enzyme
"catalase". The rapid decomposition of the H2O2 forms oxygen gas and
water and much heat. The oxygen gas forces the heated water out with an
explosive force as steam and drives off the attacker. The reaction is
very exothermic turning the water to steam. Other repungent chemicals
are expelled in the steam also.

All living cells generate H2O2 as a by product of normal energy
production. Since the H2O2 is highly poisonous it is decomposed as fast
as it is created or the cell would die. Catalase enzymes in our cells
convert the H2O2 into water as fast as it is created, or we would die.
A part of the ageing process is thought to be the decrease in our
normal catalase levels, which allow cells to die from H2O2 poisoning.
Sometimes this is called programed cell death.

 Bless you Bob Lee
