Dear Janet, I don't know that much about Same, but many things can affect the thyroid. I learned that researching graves disease for my mother-in-law. Seems a whole class of veggies can possible cause hypothyroidism. Cabbage especially, but other cruciferous veggies too.
One thing that it could be at your mother's age is lacrimosis or "dry-eye" and she might need artificial tears, but it is most likely just vein fragility which could be cause by of all things a virus too.
