The activated charcoal was prescribed by two different doctors, to remove some heavy metals. It was explained that the metals would bind to the charcoal, and be removed from the body. Have several friends also, whose children were given charcoal at emergency rooms, for various kinds of poisoning (accidental of course). I am not sure exactly how it works, but have not experienced any bad side effects (at least that I know of), and have taken it on and off now for a year. Took it for a week, before starting the CS, as a precaution after reading some of the comments regarding CS and mercury. I have wondered about how the charcoal would work with the CS also, but at worst, figured some of the silver might bind with the charcoal, and be removed. suzy
