 2.  Tending to prevent or ward off.

Pro-phy-lac-tic: (n)
  1. Something (as a medical preparation) that is prophylactic.

Pro-phy-lax-is: (n)
  1. Measures designed to preserve health and prevent the spread of disease.

  2. Protective or preventive treatment
