I unpacked Fowlers Modern English Usage; In the reference to long variants 'The better the writer, the shorter his words' ... those who run to long words are mainly the unskilled and tasteless; they confuse pomposity with dignity, flaccidity with ease, and bulk with force; .... needless lengthenings of established words due to oversight or caprice: ... preventative (preventive)... It is going to be a tough one to give up. To keep this on topic. As a preventative measure I wash my veggies in water with a splash of CS before using or storing.
