Hi gang! I've exchanged e-mail with Rosemary. I think I've smoothed the waters so she knows I'm not encouraging anyone to harass her and we don't have to look forward to an organized campaign to disrupt our list.
A web site dedicated to rationally countering the specific claims she makes would be a good project. Ultimately, she has no more explicit proof of hazard than we have of safety: ** It seems that she will accept no proof that CS does anybody any good because, indeed, all that we have are the dreaded "anecdotal accounts." ** Anybody with the wherewithal and motivation to mount decent studies is damned for having a financial interest in the outcome. ** Specific cases of argyria related to "modern CS" are, at this point, "unsubstantiated." ** Many of her arguments fall prey to the ubiquitous morphing silver source fallacy -- again, lumping all silver, in any quantity, together for the purpose of instilling doubt. ... and on and on. Some of the things she says or implies are absolutely true. For instance, her comment that *we* are doing the toxicology studies that ought to be done on CS, with ourselves as the guinea pigs! For that matter, we *agree* with her about many of the ridiculous claims made about CS (and other alternative health concepts). One of the best things we do for new folks is to help them scrap the BS. Rosemary is unwilling to see us, our community, as distinct from the charlatans, however. I don't see any solution for that but to keep doing what we're doing -- learning all that we can and sharing our results with those who ask. Ultimately, what else can we do? Should we be attempting to silence her or convert her to our cause? Making personal attacks on her? I don't think so! Should we counter her ideas with facts and logical arguments of our own? Of course! When the day comes that we *can't* make a better case for CS than she can make against it, she'll deserve to win! I don't see that day coming any time soon. Do you? I hope you understand where I'm coming from. I seldom crack the whip so smartly, but this time I felt we were making a mistake. Comments?
