In the 1800s cayenne pepper did the same thing, in once case a trapper who >had been caught in a blizzard or something had frostbite so bad his legs were >black fromthe knee down. Cayenne pepper internally and externally regrew all >but the tips of two toes when conventional docs of the day wanted to amputate. Do you have a reference to this info? By the way gangrene is an infection, which can infect dead tissue (dry gangrene) or can infect dead tissue and cause living tissue to become infected, blocking the blood supply (wet gangrene). It is important to keep the existing capillaries open (hence cayene I guess) and the tissue supplied with oxygen (hyperbaric oxygen treatment works well in this regard) low level light treatment (red or infrared LED's or laser) encourages the growth of new cappilaries and helps the lymph clear.
