Ed; One could even use a brass rod. It takes a silver plate almost immdeiately. Some people even use a brass or stainless steel negative electrode with no bad effects.
As for the #14 silver wire one would only need about 1/2" of #14 copper wire insulation to hold it on. This method of stiring can get very violent is the stir ros is not very straight with the exception of the angle bend. Some have just used the plain insulation without the copper wire in place.
