The magnet on a hard drive is kind of kidney-shaped with 1/2 being north face and the other 1/2 south. Of course the other side is reversed. Magnets also come in striped configurations on the rubber magnetic insoles and the business cards, and on industrial parts too. They can be magnetized in any configuration you want.
