Mike:
>Had I been "taking a firm stand ... and implementing sanctions against
>such deplorable behavior" all along, Stephen would not have been there
>to Bill to insult.
Unless I have missed some of Stephen's posts, I have not seen
Stephen come even close to the kind of personal attacks and
insults that Bill dished out. Besides, I do not necessarily think
that Bill should be booted off the list - at least not at first and
only if he refuses to reform.
Mike:
>In the first place, it was Stephen's repeated accusations that I was
>wrong to ban his friend Stuart, and his insistance that personal
>attacks are somehow justifiable behavior when he and Stuart were
>making them, that triggered my public re-examination of how this list
>should be run! And now it is Stephen who retreats in the face of a
>personal attack of the exact sort he would otherwise have me condone!
>And he continues to blame me for his failure here...
I think that you are doing Stephen a great injustice by comparing him
to Bill. Furthermore, it was not Bill's message as such but the humiliating
cheers that were expressed in support (of Bill) that forced him to leave.
He was not left with many other options were he to retain his dignity.
I doubt that you or anybody else would have acted much differently in
a similar situation.
>Rest assured, Stephen may have abandoned the field but his enemies
>have also failed --- and we will be stronger for it.
The silver list is not stronger with the loss of Stephen.
Peter
PS. Regarding list changes I am very much in line with Terry Chamberlin.
Furthermore, I believe that vendors should be able to discuss freely the pros
and cons of various cs products, including their own, so long it is done in a
civil manner. Without these type of educational exchanges the list would
not be the same.
