Hey People,
Before this gets into an oil war I want to share what I know about Canola;
and the easiest way to do that in any meaningful way is to quote from my
upcoming book. THIS MATERIAL IS COPYRIGHTED AND *MUST* REMAIN ON THIS LIST
and NOT be disseminated all over the Internet, or even privately to one
friend. Please! This is how I earn my living, by writing!
And now for the excerpt. Note that I am discussing Canola in regard to one's
diet and NOT as an alternative diesel fuel (yes, there IS a place for you
and other farmers like yourself, Robb).

One highly controversial oil, Canola, comes from the rapeseed plant and is
grown extensively in Canada. To make the oil more appealing to a mass
market, Canadian scientists renamed the product "Canola," short for
"Canadian oil." There are conflicting reports of how the oil was developed.
Some scientists claim that they used manual cross-breeding techniques on two
related cruciferous plants, both known as rapeseed, to lower the
naturally-occurring euric acid content of the plants (which they felt was
excessive). But Sally Fallon [author of *Nourishing Traditions*] gives an
entirely different story that Canola is a genetically engineered plant,
created by bombarding the seeds with radiation. Regardless of how the oil
originated, at least 50% of today's Canola crop is genetically engineered by
the Monsanto corporation to make it resistant to its herbicide Round Up.
Assuming the best-case scenario-that your Canola oil was never genetically
engineered, that it's organic, and even considering its beneficial
monounsaturated fat content-the enormous pressure with which it is processed
produces high heat, which creates harmful fatty acids. So it might be wise
to avoid Canola oil entirely. [Copyright 2001 by Nina Silver]

It took me a long time to figure out what the story is on Canola oil, based
on the numerous truths and half-truths floating around. I hope this helps
clarify the issue.
