Dear Kevin, Thanks for your observations. While it is true that we have in the past applied silver nitrate to the candles, PRIOR to an additional oxidation firing, the process for application of CS does NOT involve an additional firing. So CS is applied after the last firing and before use of the purifier. The firing of AgNO3 involves an additonal firing so that the NO3 will burn off in oxidation. On the other hand, one reason we're keen on CS is that the nitrate and reduction atmosphere of the kiln causes the candles to go black, somewhat less attractive than our beautiful terra cotta.
As to the protein contained in Biopur and probably Microdyn, I'd like to know what insight you may have about any deleterious effect due to this material. I haven't seen anything on the list indicating this is a problem. From memory, you soak the clay/fibre grog with "CS", then fire before using it. Thus the "CS" could indeed be silver nitrate or true colloidal silver - the end product would be a silver deposit either way. However this all is probably academic. I don't speak Spanish, but your observation of the Biopur labelling: "Nina, Your concern is quite justifiable. I have taken a magnifying glass to one of the little bottles of the Biopur, and this is what it has to say: FORMULA: Agua destilada, proteina y plata coloidal estable al 0,15%" I'll bet that means protein stabilized colloid, 15%, in distilled water. What's the bet Microdyn is not also protein stabilized? regards, Kevin Nolan -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver.
