<<Recancostat is... a patented nutritional formula consisting of anthocyans,
L-cysteine, and, most importantly, reduced glutathione. >>
http://www.drdebe.com/RECANCOS.htm

The method above is pretty close to ineffective, but up to about 4 years or
so ago it was all they had, and because they don't know better, it is still
often promoted by MDs and Naturopaths. The rest of the data on the one page
is pretty good, but making the connection between this product and raising
cellular GSH levels is a large leap of faith. It will marginally increase
plasma GSH levels however.

It is well-established that l-cysteine is mainly broken down by the
digestive system and what little enters the bloodstream does not get into
the cells appreciably to make cellular glutathione. So besides being
ineffective, l-cysteine at decent doses has known toxicity issues.

Reduced glutathione GSH also is broken down into its components in the gut
and is almost completely ineffective at making cellular glutathione because
it also does not enter the cells. This is a matter of peer-reviewed
published research.

What I'm referring to is that OPTIMAL GSH production; real,
disease-correcting, useful levels of cellular glutathione cannot even be
approached with the above method. For that, the glutathione precursor
cystine must be used. It cannot be 'added' to the body in a workable form.

<<Anthocyans have antioxidant activity. >> This has nothing to do with GSH
production but like they said, can regenerate plasma GSH levels.

Because the bulk of GSH action is inside the cells and this product doesn't
go to that level, I still favour the whey isolate patented for that purpose.
