A recent essay in Esquire described the careers of Cheney and Rummy.
In passing, the author mentioned that Rumsfield himself successfully
influened the FDA to approve aspartame, over the FDA's strong
reluctance. In short, this article says, the FDA did NOT want to
permit aspartame to be approved as a sweetner. Rummy pulled strings
for friends he had in the manufacturing company (Searle?) I'd need to
double check this story to make sure I have the details right -- maybe
Rummy was working for the company, I do not recall -- but the main
point is clear: that the FDA, everyone's favorite evildoer, seems to
have had the right inclinations in this case, but was bullied or
wheedled into going along with the application. This is quite
different from the usual spin about the FDA being in bed with the
pharms.

As for the health risks of aspartame, both my wife and I noticed that
the stuff caused headaches, and once I quit using it -- switching to
Stevia -- I became convinced that aspartame is no good. I would like
to subject it to some muscle testing in future.
