For that wispiness you originally expected to see---this set-up, using the 3X9-volt battery method, begins producing the plume w/in 10 seconds---every time---no starter used. Had a jeweler cut a 1 oz. 1/16"X1/2"X2" (approx) comemmorative .999 silver bar he had into 10 two-inch long strips. I use a silver-dollar sized .999 coin on the positive end and one of the 2" long strips for the negative, with 1-1/2" spacing, both cathodes immersed to just below the alligator clips, using Arrowhead distilled water and no stirring. Have no explanation for the speed, other than to note that the strips are square, as opposed to the round wire that some use, and the disparity between cathode sizes. He charged $10 for cutting, $6 for the bar, and handed me a small vial of the silver-"dust" saved from the cuttings. jr
