Well, I had smoked for a couple years in high school, quit for 13 years, and started again during one of my periods of heavy drinking. After about a year or so of smoking I developed a strange arthritis-like condition where I'd get inflammation in various joints and tendons (wrists, arms, legs, & groin) that would come and go and change locations. I had all sorts of blood tests, and the only thing the doctor could do was tell me that I had bursitis and prescribe anti-inflammatories. I'd take as many as 12 over the counter ibuprofen each day to keep the inflammation down. Ultimately, I quit drinking, and 8 months after that, I quit smoking. What I found is that nightshade veggies aggravated the condition, so I cut all tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant from my diet. Over time, the attacks became less frequent, and after about three years it occurred to me that the condition had completely disappeared. I was told by someone that tobacco contains stuff that gets in the connective tissues and causes irritation and that with time the stuff detoxes out of the body. I don't know if that's a load of crap, but I've been able to eat as many nightshade veggies as I like for several years now with no ill effects. If I were in your situation, I'd take two approaches: diet and detox. For diet, try cutting out all nightshades and see if it has any effect. Also, cut out all the junk vegetable oil loaded with inflammatory Omega 6 fatty acids and start supplementing with purified Omega 3 fish oil. Use olive and avocado oils for salad dressing and mayo, and butter or virgin coconut oil for cooking. There are also herbs and supplements that are supposed to be good for inflammation (like turmeric and ginger). Basically, put together an anti-inflammatory dietary regimen. As for detox, I don't know of any protocols, but I imagine there must be tobacco detox protocols out there somewhere. If I'd known my condition may have been tobacco related, I'd have certainly investigated that. That might have reduced the time it took for the condition to go away. But, you've definitely taken a big first step by quitting the chew. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it. Best of luck to you. -- John A.
