It really depends on your water.  Try mixing your tap water with the CS and
verify that it stays clear and maintains it's tyndall with a laser. If so you
are probably in business as long as you keep the bowl and water clean.  A
little spit from the dog can cause aggregation of the cs.

If it turns color, or the tyndal changes significantly, then it might be best
to use DW.
