Dear Sue,
Unless you get the most serious case hydrated, he/she will not last
another 3 days. If you do not have an IV kit..... so you can administer
lactated ringer's solution, or kindred
electrolytes-----try administering plain gatorade as an enema. The dog
will absorb a remarkable amount of the solution. This procedure will
have to be repeated about every 2 hours until favorable responses are
detected (usually about 6 to 8 hours). Try to elevate the hind quarters
to improve retention. Do not use over one pint of solution at a time.
If the animal accepts the entire initial amount without any form of
rejection....repeat the procedure within one hour. Increase time period
between administrations to 2 hours for subsequent enemas.
Sublingual vitamin B-12 should prove of benefit for general energy
level jump-start. Just slip the eye dropper inside the mouth area about
half-way back and squirt. From your description indications are that
this individual is on the verge of renal shutdown.
IV balanced fluid electrolytes is the protocol of choice; but
unless you have the equipment or access to a veterinarian, immediate
hydration through other means is critical
to preventing terminal morbidity. Also, the sugar fraction is of first
order importance in such cases.
While medicinal supports are well meant activities, without proper
hydration the individual will....in all probability....be lost quite
soon. At least that is my opinion.
Sincerely, Brooks Bradley.

This is in regard to a pom resuce. Pulled 3 poms into rescue yesterday,
2 of the 3 have severe kennel cough, the third is getting it. One of
two already with it is to the point of possibly giving up. He is
severely neglected (a stray brought in) - hair matted to the skin, nose
clogged with green gook, coughing constantly, teeth a beyond rotten, has
lost at least 3# since was original brought in shelter on 7/10, WILL NOT
EAT. Have tried canned catfood, babyfood meat, boiled hamburger -
Nada. Help.
