I've always wanted to allow a certain amount of Off Topic stuff for the
plain reason that people *do* desire it.

I want all reasonable health-related questions to be asked and answered
for the most benefit to everyone.

Inevitably some of the answers are going to be off topic.

I only ask that we taper off those discussions after a day or two and
a few handfuls of posts, so that our list doesn't become a hopeless
mish-mash. Once basic concepts have been explained enough to satisfy
people's curiosity and good resources pointed out, then it's a good
time to end.

If it really does drag on too long, I'll make a post asking folks to
end or shift the thread, but I'll seldom do that if the list isn't
being overwhelmed. I'll step in sooner as message volume gets higher
overall. If you think things are getting out of hand, give me a
private heads-up to make sure I'm paying attention.

That said, there are others with Robert who rightfully resent the
intrusion of off topic chatter. I can only ask the rest of you to
respect this and restrain yourselves out of consideration, at the same
time I ask them to tolerate the humanity of the rest of us.

A sometimes-uneasy detente is about the best we can hope for.

I have also provided an Off Topic List for any time people want to
carry on a more detailed or extended off topic thread. It is not the
perfect place to talk about Non-CS alternative medicine because it also
handles the occasional political and religious debates, but, for the
purpose of helping this list stay focused, it will serve.
