Thanks for the tips.

I've downloaded two of the programs, including Trojan Horse, which tells me
I have 7 suspicious files, but doesn't eliminate them.  (I guess I have to
buy it to get to eliminate them.)

I also used HouseCall, which found no viruses.  I also defragged, cleaned
tmp files, and tidied up disc space.  It's running faster, but still screwy.

Something is definitely affecting my computer.  I hope I eliminate it before
it drives me nuts.
