Following up my own post, I just tried something I'd been meaning to do. I find that a #8 flat washer does jump a little more than a foot in the air when placed just off center of the coil face. This is definitely the kind of behavior Beck and others describe. I just wonder if they were not very clear of what size washer they were using and this is the way the test is supposed to go?
