As an interesting aside to your wife's comment about dentist's interest in making money, ponder this:
At age fourteen in 1950, after a stint of about 5 years in Central America and the Caribbean, I visited our family dentist and had a number of cavities filled. He observed that I had a small jaw arch, both top and bottom, along with significant tooth misalignment, and that all four of my as then unerupted wisdom teeth were impinging on existing teeth and thus could not grow normally. He recommended and removed all four premolars (bicuspids) ((the first teeth behind the eyeteeth)). This allowed the natural repositioning of my misaligned teeth (my two front incisors went from 70% to 20% misalignment) and the rest of my teeth relaxed and moved as my jaw arch grew and all four of my wisdom teeth came in normally. I still have them. Fast forward to the 1970's. Every dentist I took my kids to refused to even consider such a procedure (same small jaw arch, inherited), saying it was not a recommended option. Of course they wanted to benefit from the new DENTAL INSURANCE and each one of my three kids has had to have surgical intervention for impacted unerupted wisdom teeth. So much for dental ethics. Further to the greed for profits, MD's are no saints either. I know personally of two close acquaintances who have had a total of three colonic interventions and in each case they were fitted with an ostomy appliance during major surgery, and six months later were scheduled for major surgery to restore original function!! Bowel resections were commonplace during and after World War II and I can see no reason to subject an otherwise healthy individual to the risk and danger of multiple operations if one will do.
