I would use a nebulizer frequently throughout the day. The droplets are much smaller and get deeper into the lungs. That is the whole point of a nebulizer. Larger droplets, like an ultasonic humidifier makes, will stick to the cilia and not penetrate to the alveoli, the air sacs.
I can tell a difference just looking at the vapor from my nebulizer and my ultrasonic humidifier. Nebulizers will even give you a rating on their droplet size. There may be a difference from one model to another. But there is a point beyond which they cannot call it a nebulizer, as the droplets get larger. I would also add 10% DMSO and MSM. MSM serves to soften the tissue, which can become hardened, as in emphysema. MSM also seems to work synergistically with DMSO. When I first started using this method I had a lung infection from a bad flu. It cleared it up quite rapidly. I was nebulizing four - six times a day for about 5-10 minutes. When I would first start a session I would cough and could not hold it as long. So I started out breathing less deeply and worked up to deeper as that session progressed and I did not cough as much. It did loosen the mucous which I would also cough up but that was a different kind of coughing. You can get a mask to go with the nebulizer that would make it easier for a young child. And of course would have to be introduced slowly. Perhaps without attaching to the nebulizer at first.
