Hi Joh & folks,
In Oz where I spent a lot of time in the bush and desert, I often saw
Dingoes eat vegetation - whenever they were sick.
Never saw a starving one to eat berries etc without choice. Saw a lot of
hungry ones pass up a lot of vegetation, though.
Same with cats. They eat certain types of grasses to help get out the
furballs they need to regurgitate.
My friend had a kangaroo that liked barbequed meat. Used to get sick, but
liked the taste, so.... but he drank too.
As for the coyote - ever tasted Juniper? It's also poisonous and only dumb
domesticated cows seem to eat poisonous things. It seems it was trying to
do a MAJOR medical job on itself.
I tend to look at original behaviour patterns in everything..... not being
that clever - and it seems to me that it is biologically obvious what most
critters eat from their amazing wealth of designs. Dogs eat bones and
meat. Cats eat meat and little bones. ( Modern little ones that is - I've
seen a female lion snap a large thigh bone for her cubs to get at the marrow.)
Gorillas are very picky. Not just specific tree types, but the right leaves.
Humans? I've watched a lot of their species over the years ( I'm sure
there are different species...) They are primarily scavengers. Only eat
long dead carrion opportunistically. Are basically vegetarian. Certainly
were never really hunters before sophisticated weapons came along. Very
general purpose mouths and limbs - good for fruit picking, eating. Not much
good for anything else.
The truly amazing observation while living with the most primitive people
on earth was that they too, cooked their food. The question is how did
they evolve if they have to cook their food???????
Now THAT opens up a whole new subject .................. for another time
another place...
